Story 29 of 100: Sam and Jayla

June 22, 2018

“Sam is fun, cool, and AWESOME!” – Jayla

Little Sister Jayla and Big Sister Sam have been matched a little over a year during which time Sam has been a consistent and positive presence in Jayla’s life. They have a spunky match that’s full of energy, laughs, and love. Jayla’s favorite times with Sam have been spent cooking, playing at the park, making up games together, and telling jokes. In honor of Jayla’s roots the two made Native American Soup from scratch. They also have made sweet potato soup and homemade pizza!

In between outings, the match keeps in touch by writing each other letters and FaceTiming. Outside of match activities, Sam attends Mentor Workshops through BBBS and communicates regularly with her Program Specialist to ask questions and find ways to best support Jayla. Sam also partnered with Jayla’s aunt, Jewell to support Jayla as a team. They both reach out and ask Big Brothers Big Sisters for advice and resources to assist Jayla in being her best self.

Sam described Jayla as a “deep feeler and clever thinker. She’s a master of words, creating jokes that are at least five layers deep. She is a daring adventurer. She always wants to make sure everyone feels good (even strangers). To put it simply, Jayla is strong, kind, smart, and beautiful. A one-in-a-million human. We share a love of animals, reading, exploration, and getting in the dirt.”
