Donor of the Month: Xcel Energy

August 1, 2018

Xcel Energy serves hundreds of cities and towns throughout their service territory, and for over a decade, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado has been a proud community partner. Xcel Energy has supported BBBSC with over $400,000 in grants from the Xcel Energy Foundation as well as employee volunteerism, employee contributions, corporate matching gifts, United Way campaigns and event sponsorships. For 2018, Xcel Energy also chose BBBSC as the Denver Outlaws Family 4-Pack beneficiary, raising nearly $5,000 in additional funding.

Together, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado and Xcel Energy take a collaborative approach to enhancing one-to-one mentoring with STEM education and STEM activities. Xcel Energy supports the STEM enhancement of our Team Big! Program, providing 4-6 STEM events throughout the year. We are especially grateful that Xcel Energy was the inaugural sponsor of the BBBSC STEM Career Day in 2015 which now annually provides an opportunity for Little Brothers and Little Sisters to learn about STEM careers and participate in hands-on STEM activities. Matches who attend the event rotate though various stations and participate in different STEM-related activities, demonstrations, and experiments. It is a fun day of playing, learning and exploring and in the process our Littles are exposed to career paths in science, technology, engineering and math that are available to them.

Additionally, Xcel Energy leaders serve on the Board of Directors, helping provide strategic direction as well as volunteering their time as mentors to ensure BBBSC one-to-one mentoring continues to impact children by improving sense of self and future, improving relationships, improving attitudes towards school and academic performance, and helping kids avoid delinquent behavior. Xcel Energy employees also participate annually in agency events including the Big Shots Gala, Topgolf for Kids’ Sake and the Sanctuary Golf Classic that provide ongoing support of our mentoring programs.

We’d also like to provide a special recognition to our Xcel Energy employees who dedicate their time as mentors, Board Members and volunteers. Thank you for volunteering your time and energy with BBBSC:
